Thinking Your Way to a Better Round of Golf
Before you normally start a round of golf with your buddies, what are the things that run through your mind? No doubt, and in many cases, you think about errands that you have to accomplish or work which you failed to do. You could also arrive at the golf course feeling rather sleepy or experiencing a hangover. You have been quite awfully busy and you realize much too late that going into the game without the right mindset can actually affect your game. Whether this game is a professional sport, a business requirement, or you do this just for fun, you, of course, would want to play a really good game.
So, how does one be in the right frame of mind before a round of golf? How do you get from one point to another? How do you let go of the worry and focus on the game? First, remember that this doesn’t happen overnight; it is a process you need to learn. This is something that many professional golfers do and they have enough pressure as it is. The trick isn’t always easy, especially since there’s always something going on in your life, you can’t help but dwell on it. But with practice and proper conditioning, you can motivate yourself to thinking your way to a better round of golf.
FOCUS: At least an hour before you start the round, determine where your mind is at the moment. If you’re feeling a bit upset or frustrated at your boss or a significant other, it can affect your game. Let the frustration go by not dwelling on it. Focus on what could happen in the golf course instead. Besides, the reason why you came to the game in the first place is to have fun and let go of all these frustrations and stress. When you lose your focus, you naturally get distracted and this could affect your game.
CONTROL: Identify the things that affect you before you start the round. Things like rushing from work to the golf course can put your mind off. So, to avoid that, learn to handle your time in a way that you do not have to think about rushing yourself. While in the game, think of thoughts that can help you stimulate the game and not stress you out further. If you feel frustration starting to build up, shut this thought out and literally “think happy thoughtsâ€.
MANAGE: Some negative emotions can’t just be shut down easily, so sometimes you need to manage your stress and tension by deep breathing. This actually helps and relieves tension better. Also, take a mental break once in awhile. Clear your head by doing a couple of relaxing exercise.
RECORD. Of course, the trick is not all mental. You need to be aware of your performance, as well. To help you recognize which areas you need to improve on, keep a record of your game. This record should help you channel your goals during practice and prepare yourself for a better game ahead.
Here are a couple of things you can do, to get into the right state of mind:
Play your favorite music on the way to the golf course
Sing or hum along to it
Crack jokes and laugh with your golf buddies
Take deep breaths
Meditate
Visualize your best rounds
Appreciate the luscious surrounding to uplift your spirits
Swing your club to calm you down and set your tempo
Playing golf with a good frame of mind allows you have a good game. Not everything is by the way you handle the iron. It is also a mental game. You joke with your golf buddies more and worry less. You become more focused and you sense certain quietness that helps boost your confidence. Your body feels relaxed and rested.
Remember, though, not all of these can work for you, so choose the process that you can become comfortable with. This is something that the pros have mastered and they make consistent winners. If you start thinking like the pros, you’ll see great improvement in your game.
