Playing a More Consistent Game of Golf
They say that having a good mental routine before playing a round of golf makes your game more consistent. When your mind is focused and your senses are relaxed, you are able to do well on the course. However, a mental routine is not just all you need. Golf games have to be carefully planned and along with a solid and tested mental routine. A physical routine should also be helpful. This is especially true for new golfers.
Below are some tips to help you play a more consistent golf game.
Before Shooting
Remember that the golfing is a game of accuracy. And more often than not, a player gets consumed with how far he can hit the ball; rather how much hits a player needs to do to lessen his mistakes. The real goal of golfing must be focused on making fewer strokes. In order to do that a player must recognize targets by doing calculating, visualizing and feeling.
Calculate to
- pick your target carefully.
- pick the right type of club you must use.
- pick the kind of shot you intend to take.
Visualize picturing the shot you intend to make in your mind.
Feel and take plenty of practice swings and feel your rhythm.
Categorize Your Game
It would help you practice better if you categorize your game. This way, you can devote more of your time and energy in the areas where you feel weaker and improve on them. Doing this will benefit your game in the long run and you will then be able to play consistently.
Your game can be broken down, as follows:
Ball swinging, hitting & tempo
This is an area where many golfers must need to work on. This is especially true for golf beginners than the more accomplished players. Hitting the ball must be the first thing a player needs to perfect. One has to remember that this is not just the about hitting. You must also need to work on your tempo, as this goes hand in hand with it.
Oftentimes a golfer forgets his tempo when hitting the ball. Players tend to forget their swing. Swinging is actually a pendulum motion where our arms swings back and forth on the ball, to create a rhythm (your tempo). The rhythm is often interrupted when a player tries to immediately hit the ball, therefore creating a mistake.
There is a right tempo and swing to every hit. A player just has to find his groove.
Chip, pitch and putt
This is otherwise known as the short game. Every player should spend time on his or her short game to develop consistency.
Mental Area
Golf is a game where you have to compete against yourself and the course, so it must be important to learn how to curb your emotions and channel your thoughts on the positive. As many golfers will tell you, playing under the worst mental conditions can have a big effect on your game. If you are feeling rather frustrated, you need to drive this frustration into a positive energy. Learning to play under pressure is a golfing psychology that one needs to also perfect.
One Drill at A Time
Common mistake golfers make is to lose focus because there are so many areas golfers must muster. To avoid doing that, it is best to work on one drill at a time. For instance, work on your sway and tempo first before moving on to another area. When you realize that you hit a bad shot because of something else, do not move on to correct that while you’re still working on your sway and tempo. Take one drill at a time and proceed with working on what you’re currently perfecting. That way, you do not lose focus.
Play Practice
At the range when you’re practicing, hit your balls resolutely. Do not just hit them mechanically. Though this doesn’t mean you have to put on a serious game face every time and even just for practice, if you make each of your practice shot valuable, then you will be able to apply the same when playing for real on the golf course.
Remember that playing smart also means you know what your limitations are and you have an idea of managing this. When you find some consistency in your golf routine, then you can have a steady game. Take time to develop a simple routine that should become a habit in no time. This will steer you towards better golfing.
